It`s a fair question, and an important one.
At Kiwi Park, our role is to educate visitors and advocate for these endangered alpine parrots, working closely with the @keaconservation, @docgovtnz, and the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia.
By providing close encounters here in a controlled environment, visitors learn essential behaviours such as not feeding wild kea, understanding how to interact responsibly, and knowing what to expect in the kea`s natural habitat. These lessons are vital for protecting wild kea by reducing harmful human interactions. Sadly, kea-human conflicts still occur, sometimes even resulting in birds being harmed or killed.
The kea in our care are too comfortable around humans, making them unsuitable for release back into the wild. Habituation means they would actively seek out human environments and interactions, potentially placing themselves in harm`s way.
If you would like to help save kea in the wild, you can report your kea sightings to the Kea Database and support ongoing conservation efforts through the Kea Conservation Trust.

Is it fur or feathers? 🥝🪶
Kiwi might look like they’re wearing fuzzy little fur coats, but they`re actually covered in super fluffy, hair-like feathers!
These fine feathers are an amazing adaptation that helps kiwi stay warm and blend seamlessly into their surroundings. Perfect camouflage for a bird that spends all its time scurrying around on the forest floor and is especially useful for keeping out of sight from predators overhead.

He got real quiet, real quick. 😬
One way to identify the sex of a kiwi is by its unique call.
A male kiwi will emit a series of repeated high-pitched notes, while the female kiwi will often interrupt him... with her own more guttural cry.
