We have made the news again today in the Mountain Scene!

On the 10th of May our park manager Paul Kavanagh aided in the release of a young crested grebe. It had somehow made its way into the delivery section of The Warehouse.

Luckily the bird had no major injuries, apart from being slightly dehydrated. The #CrestedGrebe is a very endangered bird, with fewer than 600 left in New Zealand. So it is a good job that this young grebe has now been re-located to the much better suited habitat of Lake Hayes. Thanks to Orla Fitzpatrick and the amazing team at VetEnt, Chris from DOC and Dawn Palmer!

Meet our team at the Kiwi Birdlife Park!

Today marks eleven years since Kotaro joined the ranks of the park. So we decided it should be his turn to answer a few questions...

What has been your best moment whilst working in the Park?

I have two. First was driving the tractor here because this had been my dream ever since I came to New Zealand. Second was explaining about the Kiwi in Japanese to the former Prime Minister of Japan.

Do you have a favourite native bird from New Zealand and Japan?

My favourite is the #Weka because the Kiwi is already a national icon here. Also I feel the #Takahē is a legendary flightless bird. I like the Rooster from Japan because I used to look after them. I am not sure if they are native though.

It is understood that you are into your rock music. If you could be in a band which one would it be and why?

Of course it would be in Jimmy Hendrix's band, but he is no longer here. So instead I want to replace the position of #RichieSambora in #BonJovi. I believe I am better than him at playing guitar. I am just lacking a nice face and height.

Strong answers Kotaro. You have a great face, just maybe you are lacking Richie's luscious long locks?

Thanks for all the hard work you have put in over the past decade.

It's kea health check time!! Here's our wee boy TC getting an annual once over from Orla Fitzpatrick from VetEnt. He was brought into us after being hit by a car and unfortunately is not releasable. Check out his awesome colours. Do you know that our pals at Altitude Brewing have just sponsored an exhibit renovation for our kea. Stay tuned for a big spring clean!! #altitutebrewing #mischievouskea #kea #kiwibirdlifepark ... See MoreSee Less

A big chur to all of our volunteers from Nomads Queenstown.

Today was Rea Clarke's last day volunteering at the Park. Unfortunately she was the final volunteer Nomads were able to send due to new work for accommodation regulations. They had been kindly sending the park volunteers for the past year. We greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication you have all put in. You will be missed greatly!

If you are interested about volunteering at the Kiwi Birdlife Park or would like some more information feel free to send an e-mail to:

Meet our Team at the Kiwi Birdlife Park!

Today we are introducing another new keeper at the Park.... Randal Counihan

This Irish fella moved to Queenstown in order to take on the role after volunteering with Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari. Here are the questions we decided to ask him:

So what made you apply for the keeper role at the Kiwi Birdlife Park?

Having worked with wildlife in the field for many years, I was interested in tackling a new angle of conservation. The KBP does some great work with several endangered native species and I look forward to the challenge of working with these animals.

Apparently you had never seen a kiwi before getting the job, what is the most interesting thing you have learnt about them so far?

I think that their incredible sense of smell and the size of the eggs they lay are both amazing parts of this fascinating birds life.

What is the most important thing so far you have contributed to conservation efforts?

Loggerhead Turtle conservation in Greece with ARCHELON Zakynthos. Everyday we helped the turtles on their nesting beaches and educated all of the visitors and locals on the islands. Over the years it was great to see the difference we made in increasing nest numbers and much more interest in the project from the public.

Finally... Would you rather have a bird continually nesting in your beard OR have to shave it off forever?

That is easy... I am sure I can find a bird in the park willing to share my beard. I could even train it to send messages when I run out of phone reception.

Thanks Randal! It is great to have you as part of the team.
